Why Do Extension Cords Get Hot? Here's What Every Homeowner Should Know

You've probably experienced it before.

You're mowing the lawn, running a pressure washer, plugging in power tools in the garage, or setting up decorations for a party. After an hour or two, you unplug the extension cord and notice something that makes you stop.

It's warm. Maybe even hot.

So, is that normal?

The answer is: sometimes.

A slightly warm extension cord isn't always cause for concern. But if it's becoming noticeably hot to the touch, it's trying to tell you something—and ignoring it could lead to damaged equipment, melted insulation, or even a fire.


Why Do Extension Cords Get Warm?

Electricity naturally creates a small amount of heat as it flows through a wire. Under normal conditions, that heat is minimal and safely dissipates into the air.

The problem starts when the extension cord has to work harder than it was designed to.

Several things can cause an extension cord to overheat.

1. The Cord Is Too Small for the Job

Not all extension cords are created equal.

Many homeowners grab whichever cord is closest without realizing that thinner cords are designed for lighter-duty use. Plugging a high-powered tool, space heater, or air compressor into a lightweight extension cord forces more electricity through a wire that isn't built to handle it.

The result? Heat.

The more heat that's generated, the greater the risk of damaging the cord—or worse.

2. The Cord Is Too Long

The longer an extension cord is, the harder electricity has to work to reach the other end.

As the distance increases, so does electrical resistance. More resistance means more heat.

This is one of the reasons we recommend using the shortest extension cord that safely reaches your equipment. Longer isn't always better.

3. The Cord Is Still Coiled Up

This is something we see all the time.

Someone plugs in a 100-foot extension cord but only needs 20 feet, so they leave the rest neatly wrapped on the spool.

It looks organized—but it can actually become dangerous.

When electricity flows through a coiled cord, the heat has nowhere to escape. Instead of cooling naturally, it builds up inside the tightly wound loops.

4. You're Using a High-Powered Appliance

Some appliances draw significantly more electricity than others.

Items like:

  • Space heaters

  • Portable air conditioners

  • Air compressors

  • Table saws

  • Circular saws

  • Pressure washers

  • Large shop vacuums

all require much more power than something like a phone charger or lamp.

If the extension cord isn't rated for that load, it can overheat surprisingly quickly.


When Is an Extension Cord Too Hot?

A cord that feels slightly warm after hours of use may not be unusual.

A cord that is:

  • Too hot to comfortably hold

  • Soft or flexible in one spot

  • Giving off a burning smell

  • Showing melted insulation

  • Discolored near either end

is not normal.

If you notice any of these warning signs:

  • Unplug it immediately.

  • Allow it to cool completely.

  • Do not continue using it until you've identified the cause.

  • Replace any damaged extension cord rather than trying to repair it.

Extension cords are inexpensive. Electrical fires are not.


How to Prevent an Extension Cord From Overheating

Fortunately, preventing overheating is usually simple.

✔ Choose the correct gauge extension cord for the equipment you're using.

✔ Use the shortest cord that safely reaches.

✔ Fully uncoil long extension cords before plugging them in.

✔ Never overload a cord with multiple high-powered devices.

✔ Inspect cords regularly for cracks, cuts, or damaged plugs.

✔ Replace worn cords immediately.


When It's Time to Call an Electrician

If you frequently rely on extension cords because you never seem to have an outlet where you need one, the real problem may not be the cord.

It may be that your home simply doesn't have enough properly placed outlets.
